Blushing

Blushing is an Austin, TX based dreampop / shoegaze quartet comprised of two husband and wife pairs that share a love of making melodic, atmospheric music. Blushing formed in the summer of 2015 when after a few years of writing songs on guitar Michelle found a musical partner in friend Christina who brought her lifelong classical vocal training and bass playing prowess to the project.

They then enlisted the musical talents of their marital partners, Jake on drums and Noe on lead guitar. Their styles and influences converged and after a year of evolving those original songs and honing their musical spirit, they are releasing their first EP on January 13th titled "Tether" recorded, mixed and mastered by Phillip Odom at Bad Wolf Recordings in Austin, TX. The album encompasses influences from all of the bands they collectively share a deep affection for such as Lush, The Sundays, Belly, Beach House, Real Estate, etc.

Blackie & The Oohoos

If you were innocently seduced by their first album, the second will surely leave you wrecked upon the cliffs. There’s no escape from the siren song of the Maieu sisters!

In early November, Blackie & the Oohoos will be releasing their 2nd studio album, their first release with Unday/NEWS (see also Yuko, Flying Horseman,…). The band’s choice of producer Pascal Deweze (Sukilove, The Van Jets, Creature with the Atom Brain,…) this time resulted in some potent chemistry.

“Song for two sisters” is suffused with a dark, otherworldly atmosphere full of underlying dread. The psychedelic dreampop and spooky folk from their debut is back but the songs and lyrics have a more mature, eccentric and distilled quality. “Song for two sisters” is an impressive album. The delicious multipart vocals combined with their highly original sound has a smouldering appeal!

For those looking for references, Beach House, Mazzy Star, David Lynch and Beth Gibbon give a general idea.

Dark Sky

Matt Benyayer and Thomas Edwards together make up the London based production duo Dark Sky. Having met at secondary school, Dark Sky formed in 2009 out of a mutual love for the ever evolving London electronic music scene, a love that the pair have always reflected through not only their DJ sets but also their productions.

Fast forward a few years and the London based duo have repeatedly toured the globe, remixed the likes of The xx and Maya Jane Coles via Bombay Bicycle Club and Kelis and have released music with Mister Saturday Night, 50WEAPONS, Black Acre, Tectonic, Pictures Music and Monkeytown records.

August 2014 saw the release of Dark Sky’s long awaited debut album on the aforementioned Monkeytown Records. Founded by Modeselektor, the globe trotting duo have been long term Dark Sky supporters, and subsequently their label proved the perfect home for Dark Sky’s percussion driven, soul laced debut album ‘imagin.’

‘imagin’ in turn lead to the development of their hardware heavy live show and over the following eighteen months Dark Sky performed live throughout Europe with notable appearances at Glastonbury, The Warehouse Project, Sub Club, Melt, DGTL, Robot Festival and countless others. The show wowed audiences with live re-works of their album tracks and back catalogue, truly showcasing not only the depth and quality of their recording career so far but also their talent to perform live as well being highly competent DJs.

After some down time spent in the studio, 2017 will see the return of Dark Sky to Monkeytown as they ready the release of their sophomore album entitled ‘Othona’ due for release in April 2017. Across nine tracks, Othona is a return to the deeper darker realms of dance music from which Dark Sky emerged. Heavy on bottom end with subtle melodies and emotive synths ‘Othona’ is Dark Sky’s most dynamic and accomplished work to date. The LP will in turn yield a new live show - trading in the live percussion of ‘imagin’ in favour of a more hardware lead set up primed for the dance floor.

To sample the breadth of their tastes, tune into their monthly radio show on NTS.

Sun Glitters

Traveling sideways in time, Sun Glitters' It Will Be Forever is a cinematic cruise that illustrates a retro-future landscape of wildlife. Brimming with its own synthetic nature, the album's foundations of heavy bass, complemented and contradicted by electronica melodies, carve a panoramic view as he journeys between apprehensive, haunting tension and bright, revelatory scenery.

Sun Glitters (real name Victor Ferreira) spent his formative years as a teen in the 1980s, naturally gravitating to the luminous synth sounds characteristic of that time. Now, with a copy of the Drive OST under his arm and witnessing his own children's inquisitive nature about the world, Victor found himself drawing inspiration from within–opening the door to nostalgia and taking a trip down a memory lane paved by dreams drawn on an Atari ST.

The result is It Will Be Forever, a love letter to a time of not so distant past–or perhaps so far in the future that it defies imagination–and a contemplative soundtrack that acknowledges the paths leading to this point, both personally and communally. Painting a vivid Tech Noir world layer-by-layer, It Will Be Forever reflects the cautious anticipation many of us feel today in the digital age: a sense of something bigger looming. Spanning 11 tracks, the album depicts a version of the seven stages of grief, with the conclusion being the most poignant as it closes with a wonder and zest for life that the author hopes to impart on us.

Cuesta Loeb

NYC native, Christina Cuesta Loeb (who dropped the "Christina" for her debut solo project) comes from a family of musicians. Born to world-renown jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb and Spanish singer-songwriter/actress Carmen Cuesta, she grew up between the US and Spain, studying classical flute and bassoon. While she really enjoyed performing and playing in orchestras, Cuesta Loeb was unable to find her voice in classical music. In 2015, she moved to Los Angeles and began experimenting in her own songwriting and production.

Inspired by Green Day, The Smashing Pumpkins, Fiona Apple, and (early) Sheryl Crow, she combined her love of dark, haunting melodies with dreamy, etherial instrumentation and vocals. She found her home somewhere in the world of Dream Pop, with a blend of everything from acoustic ukuleles to Shoegaze-heavy guitars. From this, she self-produced and recorded her first 4 track EP, Dive, to be independently released in September of 2016.

Heaters

HEATERS is Nolan Krebs, Joshua Korf, Ryan Hagan and Ben Taber.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based band got their start in 2014 - a year which saw the band make some tremendous leaps, spewing out a handful of homespun EPs, split records, and an appearance on Stolen Body’s Vegetarian Meat psych compilation. Their first EP, Solstice, was released on Dizzybird Records. Brooklyn-based psych label Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records released a 7" at the beginning of 2015, "Mean Green", as well as the band’s debut full-length long-player, "Holy Water Pool" in September.

The group has drawn acclaim across the globe for their spacey, driving take on West Coast psych rock. Tapping into both the twang of their ‘60s garage compatriots and building their own brand of expansive, cosmic swells, Pitchfork calls the band “catchy and kinetic,” noting their “energy and hook writing are clearly on point.” Combining a seemingly constant output of “reverb-coated, fuzz-studded, hard-driven garage psych” with a kaleidoscopic, hip-shaking live set, HEATERS are quickly forging something new and exciting.

Hauschka

Hauschka is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who has brought an exciting new perspective to the prepared piano. The prepared piano – a technique for getting new sounds from the acoustic keyboard by resting pieces of paper or drumsticks on the strings of the instrument - has been used for centuries, but Hauschka was unaware of the tradition when, at the dawn of the new millenium, he began exploring ways to get new sounds out of his Bechstein grand upright. “I wanted the sound of a hi-hat (cymbal) to add a percussive effect to a composition I was writing. I took foil from a Christmas cake and wrapped it around the strings [inside the piano]. From there, I was inspired to use other objects on the strings to get bass drum sounds, or tacks on the piano hammers to get the sound of a harpsichord. When I was playing techno music, I had samplers where you could get a different sound on every key. I thought it would be great to have that effect on an acoustic piano. I was not aware of John Cage (one of the first 20th century composers to use prepared piano) when I started searching for ways to alter the sound of the keyboard, but as I got more into prepared piano, I was influenced by Cage’s theories.”

The Prepared Piano, Hauschka’s first recording using prepared piano, was a solo album of spontaneous improvisations. The sounds he generated changed the course of his musical journey and he’s since used prepared piano in a variety of settings. On Ferndorf, pieces composed in honor of his childhood home in Germany, he balanced improvisation with compositions that featured cellists, trombonists and violinists playing his inventive arrangements. The ‘acoustic techno’ of Salon des Amateurs featured drummers Samuli Kosminen (Múm), and Joey Burns and John Convertino (Calexico) and dropped subtle electro effects into the mix. On Silfra, an improvised collaboration with classical violinist Hilary Hahn, he dipped into classical music and ambient pop to create an expansive soundscape. With Abandoned City, Hauschka returns to the solo prepared piano to produce an evocative work full of unexpected grace notes and mysterious sounds.
